I still want art/video of the duel between Finrod and Sauron done with duelling guitars. (And so do you. You know it.)

Some Prowl and/or Jazz icons 'cuz I have zero Transformers icons right now and at some point I went from 'do they even have dialogue together?'* to 'my OTP, let me show you it.'

*The cartoon set up shop in my head in 1984 and has refused to leave ever since.

Some really good horror recs for Hellboy (movie or comics).

Day 9

In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you have created. It can be your favorite fanworks that you've created, or fanworks you feel no one ever saw, or fanworks you say would define you as a creator. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I haven't been particularly fannishly creative over the past year, so I'm just reposting my answer from last year's challenge:

I'm still pleased with The Longest Night, a LoTR fanfic I wrote in 2015 for the International Fanworks Day challenge over on  lotr_community[profile] lotr_community. It came in 2nd place in the Tree and Flower Awards 2015 for Favorite Story Featuring a New Author, which was a most pleasant surprise!

Honesty, an SPN fanfic that I really need to remember to post on A03, is one I think I include in this challenge every year but it's one of my favorites. It's a drabble based around Dean and Future!Cas' conversation in the truck during 'The End'. Future!Cas breaks my heart, he truly does.

Through the Gates, a Goblin Emperor fanfic written for [community profile] smallfandomfest Round 19 and based on the prompt 'It's not quite love, but it's not just duty, either.' It's about Maia and Csethiro's developing relationship, because I wanted to see more of that, dammit!

Calling Frequency, a Dead Space fanfic also written for [community profile] smallfandomfest Round 19 and based on the prompt 'Trapped on Tau Volantis after the events of Dead Space 3, an injured Carver has to rely on Isaac for help.'. This one was challenging because a) I've only played DS3 single-player and thus only really know Carver through cut scenes and b) it's mostly dialogue and I had a hard time remembering to include actions and descriptions and not wind up with something that read like, as How Not to Write a Novel says, two disembodied brains in a jar having a conversation. But I succeeded!

For the curious, previous versions of this challenge are at the following links: 2016, 2015, 2014.

Oh, god, I honestly can't believe it's 2017 already. Thank whatever powers might exist that the clusterfuck of 2016 is over - and that's honestly all I want to say about the past year. Pretty sure most people agree with me.

But! Snowflake is back! :D This is honestly one of the highlights for the start of the year and I'm grateful to everyone who stepped up as a new mod because I really needed this. That's definitely not a criticism of [personal profile] akamine_chan and co-runners! I understand they've had a tough year, and I also get that if you don't have the spoons, you don't have the spoons and need to step back and engage in some self-care. There's absolutely nothing wrong with that and whoever tells you otherwise is lying. *hugs for you all*

One of Tauriel's Sermon on the Riverbank graphics came up in my Tumblr feed this morning and it made a very good point: what does Smaug eat? I mean, he's a dragon, and he's massive. He'd be an apex predator, right? So the area surrounding Erebor should be pretty much emptied of game, including humans, if he's an omnivore or carnivore. If he eats trees, like the Draccus from The Kingkiller Chronicles, the area should be deforested, which it clearly isn't.

A lack of a sufficient food source could explain why he stays in the mountain: it means he's expending less energy, possibly spends time in some kind of hibernation, and so needs less food when food sources are scarce. If he eats gold or gems, he'd want to stay close to that food source and again, it's a finite source of food so he'd want to conserve as much energy as possible. He also can't get smelted gold - or at least can't get it easily, dragonfire might be able to melt gold out of the rock that surrounds it? - on his own. Tolkien's dragons aren't natural creatures, they were created by Morgoth, and a good way to keep something that powerful under control is to control its food source. (Like the lysine dependency in Jurassic Park.) Morgoth's gone, Sauron's not in a position to gather or feed dragons even if he could control them, and they're definiely not designed for mining if minerals are their food source.

Or do Tolkien's dragons, like Discworld high dragons, exist on magic? There's a definite feeling of 'the magic goes away' throughout the legendarium, best shown in LotR with the elves departing to the West. Animals in an environment with a limited food source will select for smaller sizes (insular dwarfism) and this would again explain Smaug's lack of activity outside the mountain: he's conserving his energy. He could also be staying close to a food source: there are certainly magical artifacts in his hoard (and the Arkenstone is theorized by some to be a Silmaril) and he's grouped the whole thing together to concentrate that source.

Or am I just really overthinking this?

Some of these are repeats, both because I still like them and because I got a grand total of, um, two fics done since the last Snowflake Challenge. 2015 sucked and from a lot of people's Day 1 posts I see I'm not the only one.

To Chain Together
Fandom: The Doctrine of Labyrinths
Summary: What do you say when someone you never expected to see again shows up to say what you never expected to hear?

This one is was written for [livejournal.com profile] smallfandomfest in 2015. Mostly. The beginning was supposed to be the answer to the 2015 Snowflake Challenge's Day 6 but the opening paragraph wouldn't yield to anything larger. I ended up using it as a jumping-off point for the fic for the challenge just because I liked Mildmay's description of the lighthouse. The rest of it is because I wasn't satisfied with one of the plot threads I felt was left dangling - though to be fair it is the kind of thing that happens in real life - and because, dammit, Felix and Mildmay deserve a happy ending!

Well, reasonably. It is Doctrine of Labyrinths, after all. I'm sure something will try to possess or kill them soon.

Decisions
Summary: Erestor decides what to do with his day.

Written for the 2014 February Fanon Busters challenge on [livejournal.com profile] lotr_community. The idea of Erestor spending all his time inside and buried in paperwork never sat right with me: if you're immortal you're probably going to develop process improvement at some point, after all.

Honesty
Summary: Cas has his reasons for letting Dean see what he does.

Sad drabble based around Dean and Future!Cas' conversation in the truck during 'The End'. Future!Cas breaks my heart, he's the wreck and ruin of everything Castiel was, and I'm firmly convinced that the entire conversation in question came about because he knows that and wants to change it.

30. Do you have a favorite fic you've written? What makes it your favorite? And don't forget to give us a link.

Despite all the trouble it gave me actually getting it down that would be The Longest Night. I think I did a good job capturing the feel of a cold winter's night when the sky is clear and the stars are out.

***

Ouff! And that's 30! I'm both surprised and pleased I managed it without missing a day and having to catch up.

11. Have you ever attempted an "adaptation" fic of a favorite book or movie but set in a different fandom?

No, but I've helped a friend plot out a few fairy-tale adaptations, and I've enjoyed adaptations others have done. A favorite is Of leaves of Gold and Petals Red by Ithilwen of Himring, a LoTR-style adaptation of Tam Lin. This one also goes back to the question about OCs, in that it features one used to good purpose.
hoursgoneby: (Hourglass)
9. Pairings – For each of the fandoms from day two, what are your three favorite pairings to write?

Hmm, that's a tough one since I never seem to write pairings.

Transformers...can't really think of any. There were canon couples - Optimus Prime and Elita One, Ironhide and Chromia, Firestar and Inferno, Spike and Carly, Arcee and Springer - but I'm not particularly interested in writing any of them.

For Supernatural, Dean & Castiel. I'm quite convinced that Castiel is utterly in love with Dean, but I don't think it's sexual (I read angels as asexual (generally, yes, I see you there, Gabriel) but that doesn't necessarily equal aromantic) and I am certain he has no idea what to do about it. I guess Sam and Jessica and John and Mary Winchester since  they're canon? For a show with so many chicks of the week there aren't a lot I'd want to come back to. I would have liked to have seen more of Sarah from the creepy painting episode in season 1 though.

Lord of the Rings is another one where I'm kind of coming up blank. I do like fic with Elrond and Celebrian, and I'm definitely a fan of Erestor and Glorfindel. I like Celeborn and I'm not as sold on Galadriel but I do like her in the hands of the right writer.

In the Doctrine of Labyrinths we have a number of canon couples but none of them seem to end well. Sometimes that just means a breakup and sometimes it means horrible tragedy. I wrote To Chain Together about the aftermath of the end of Felix and Shannon's relationship, as canon didn't quite satisfy me. There's also Mildmay and Mehitabel (breakup), Felix and Gideon (horrible tragedy), and Felix and Malkar (nightmarishly abusive). Felix and Mildmay (incest) was more than hinted at through most of the series but I'm not sure it applies by the end, if that makes sense without spoiling the books for you.

The Iron Elves didn't really have couples. Konowa wound up with someone, and his parents were in the novels but one of them was a squirrel at the time.

Yeah. It makes sense in context.

3. For each of the fandoms from day two, what were your favorite characters to write?

  1. Transformers: It's been so long I honestly don't remember.

  2. Supernatural: Castiel. Because I can sympathise with a poor confused bastard who doesn't quite understand humanity. The drabble I wrote about Future!Cas, Honesty, is still one of my favorite things I've written.

  3. Lord of the Rings: Erestor, who's actually a character I fell in love with via other people's fanfic, which is also the reason I ship him with Glorfindel. Erestor's an interesting character to write because he only had one line in the books, we don't know that much about him, so despite that he's canon you can pretty much give him whatever characterization you want.

  4. Doctrine of Labyrinths: Mildmay. Writing Mildmay means you don't have to worry as much about grammar (he doesn't have poor grammar, necessarily, it's just very very casual) and you can swear a lot. Mildmay is a good character to write when you're frustrated.

  5. The Iron Elves Trilogy: Well, by default it'd have to be Konowa Swift-Dragon, since he's the only character in the one drabble I wrote for it. XD

Master post is here.

2. Name the fandoms you've written in, and how much you've written in that fandom, and if you still write in it.
Let's see...

  1. Transformers, when I was younger, but that's all offline now and either intentionally deleted or wiped from existence by a harddrive that turned into a brick.

  2. Supernatural, five fics and a couple of WiPs, though I haven't written anything in SPN since mid-season 5. I really should upload those to AO3 at some point.

  3. Lord of the Rings, three fics, including one I just finished recently for the LOTR Community September Challenge.

  4. Doctrine of Labyrinths, one fic, and I can't say if I'd keep writing in DoL or not because I just find it so hard to write Felix and do him justice.

  5. The Iron Elves, one fic, written for a Snowflake Challenge back in 2013, and I don't know that I'd write more because I find the story pretty complete as-is.

Title: First Harvest

Theme: The Great Feast: September Challenge
Elements: the host or hostess or both
Author's Notes: I would say Pippin is somewhere around eight or nine here, with his sisters ranging from early teens to early twenties. Young enough to be responsible with minor chores, not quite old enough to help in the kitchen.

Eglantine may or may not be channeling some of the things I've heard my mother and grandmother say to my brother and I.
Summary: It takes planning to get a meal for so many on the table in a timely fashion. Fortunately Eglantine Took has had plenty of practice, and a lot of help.

Day 7

In your own space, share your love for a trope, cliché, kink, motif, or theme. (More than one is okay, too.) Tell us about it, tell us why you love it, give us some examples and recs. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Trope: Pretty much anything that falls under the umbrella of Cosmic Horror Story. Anything by Lovecraft is an example and if you really want a mindscrew, go for Robert W. Chambers' The King in Yellow. For me this trope works better in print, because in visual medium there's too much of a tendency to show instead of hint and cosmic horror is always worse when you have to use your imagination.

Cliché: Love at First Sight, although I prefer it when people fall for each other but we still see them have to work at it to maintain the relationship. You know, like in real life. I even like it if the relationship doesn't last - hey, just because you don't end up with the person doesn't mean you didn't love them. It just means it didn't work out. Enchanted has a good treatment of this: it's not impossible but you should get to know the person you've just fallen for before committing to them for your entire future.

Kink: Long hair. Mmm. Especially on men. Examples would be Lord of the Rings, of course, and A Brother's Price which, taking place in a gender-flipped world, has long hair as a masculine trait and short as a feminine one. I also have a voice kink, although that one's a little harder to pin down and define. Some voices should do it for me and don't, some are unexpected.

Motif: Pretty much any fairy tale motif, especially if they involve dragons and/or female characters who win through by being clever. One of the first books I ever had headcanon for was The Paper Bag Princess by Robert Munsch; I liked to pretend that at the end of the book Elizabeth managed to rescue another princess and they went off and had adventures together. Another favorite is All-Kinds-of-Fur, also known as Donkeyskin, Catskin, Cap O' Rushes and more. All-Kinds-of-Fur is beautifully put together as a comic by Erstwhile and is available here. (Seriously, check out Erstwhile, they do gorgeous work.)

Theme: Works that deal with the balance between good and evil. There's a lot of these, especially in fantasy. Eve Forward's Villains by Necessity is downstairs in my 'to-read' pile and it looks to have an interesting treatment: the good guys have won over, screwing up the balance and from there it does what it says on the tin. On the opposite side of the spectrum, I also like works that don't have a great overarching stop-the-world-from-ending theme but deal more with people and their development. I'm going to rec The Goblin Emperor for this because it's an amazing book and deserves all the love. In fact, that link will take you to an online excerpt of the first four chapters and I would be happy to see people come back and comment 'dammit, now I have to read the rest of it!' :)

Well, I just bit the bullet, and got my elements for the February LOTR Community Challenges, um, challenge. See, I will often be lazy about writing things for me, but give me a deadline and feel such guilt about missing it. :P So I ought not to procrastinate too badly.

1) Finrod's song battle with Sauron done as dueling guitars. Picture, fanvid, fic...if anyone wants to give me these two rockin' out, I can reward you with joyous squees and eternal gratitude. :P

2) Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn fanfic recs. (There isn't much. I've probably found what there is. But I can try! Perhaps there is some small, not significant to Google, archive I've not found. One never knows.) Or new fanfics, if anyone would like to stretch their wings...

3) Take a look at my tags and let me know if there are any amazing fanworks I just have to be aware of. Don't worry that it might not be to my taste: the worst that will happen is I'll say "thank you for the rec" and leave it at that. Or, if you ask me what I thought, "thank you for the rec, but it wasn't my cup of tea".

4) A vid for The Hobbit done to Blind Guardian's The Bard Song - The Hobbit. (There are two versions of The Bard Song. Both are amazing.)

5) An Iron Elves Trilogy fandom to exist. This one, this is the "I want a pony for Christmas!" of this particular list, I think, but you'll never get it if you don't at least ask. ;)

Day 9

Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Oh, good, this is so much easier than yesterday's! My psyche needs a break from all that extroversion.

Dark Prince ~ The Darkness Has Its Own Light by Spiced Wine.
"A half-elven OC who's the son of Sauron, and has purple eyes. Really." That was my first, doubtful, thought when I encountered a description of Vanimórë, the protagonist of Spiced Wine's Dark Prince series and 'verse. I didn't read it the first few times I saw it referenced, because I've just seen so many OCs of this type and generally don't find them to be interesting or unique. Then one night I had a few minutes to kill before bed and thought 'why not?'.

I ended up going to work the next day on about three hours sleep. It was nothing like I'd expected, and I'm so very pleased to have been wrong! You can get started at the link up there, but please do heed the chapter warnings.

Nightfall in Middle Earth by Blind Guardian
A power metal concept album based on The Silmarillion that just blew me away the first time I heard it. I had some doubts about reccing it since it's done professionally and commercially available, but then realized that was silly because those things don't mean it's not a fannish labour of love. I first learned about it when I was surfing through TVTropes (can't remember which trope) and found a link to the song 'Time Stands Still (At the Iron HIll)', about Fingolfin's duel with Morgoth. Metal, concept albums, and Tolkien are certainly all things I enjoy, but...Tolkien's work explored through power metal? Well...why not? So I listened to it.

Then I listened to the rest of the album.

Then I bought it. (OK, I listened to the rest of the band's work, and bought a box set containing Blind Guardian's entire discography up to they changed labels. And I have not regretted it.)

The Call of Cthulu
A short film based on the work of H.P. Lovecraft by the H.P. Lovecraft Historical Society. Now, films based on Lovecraft's work range from just bad, to entertainingly schlocky at best. Lovecraft's stories rarely describe the entirety of what the characters are seeing, and when they do it's something that would be difficult and/or expensive to include. His work is largely monologue, with very little dialogue making it hard to adapt to a modern film without lots and lots of rewriting - more, I think, than a major studio would be willing to put in to something they wouldn't expect to have much of an audience. With this in mind, I was not expecting great things.

BUT. It turns out that making a silent film eliminates a lot of the problems above! You watch the characters act and react, and what explanations and dialogue is needed goes on a title card. Adding to the feel that you're really watching an old silent movie are the scratches in the film, and a subtle hiss and pop to the soundtrack. It's surprisingly gripping, and does not feel like it's only 46 minutes long.
