Formality by lightningwaltz
Fandom: The Goblin Emperor
Summary: Beshelar is distressed by an attraction to Maia. He's even more aggravated when he realizes the attraction is mutual.
Archive Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Category: M/M
Additional Tags: Pining, Mutual Pining, Loyalty, Resolved Sexual Tension, Power Imbalance, consensual polyamory

I like the additional depth the author gives to Beshelar, and though she only makes a brief appearance, I quite enjoy her Csethiro as well.

Anna Hart's Letters by CenozoicSynapsid
Fandom: The Bone Key
Summary: Old love letters can still be compelling reading. Unfortunately.
Archive Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Category: Gen
Additional Tags: Lost Love

I can't really pin down why I enjoyed this one, but I did.

Ephialtes by Harukami
Fandom: The Doctrine of Labyrinths
Summary: Felix leaves Malkar, but Malkar won't ever leave Felix.
Archive Warnings: Creator Chose Not to Use Archive Warnings, Rape/Non-Con. I'm adding physical, mental, and emotional abuse. The Doctrine of Labyrinths series contains a lot of material that could potentially trigger someone. If you're not familiar with it you may want to tread carefully.
Category: M/M

I've always been curious about how, exactly, Felix slipped the bonds of the obligation de sang with Malkar, and this does an excellent job of filling in the missing events. Mind you, it's not an easy read.

I'll also leave a link here to my 2015 recs for the challenge, and here and here for 2014.

Fandom Snowflake Challenge bannerDay 03

In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you have created. It can be your favorite fanworks that you've created, or fanworks you feel no one ever saw, or fanworks you say would define you as a creator. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Some of these are repeats, both because I still like them and because I got a grand total of, um, two fics done since the last Snowflake Challenge. 2015 sucked and from a lot of people's Day 1 posts I see I'm not the only one.

To Chain Together
Fandom: The Doctrine of Labyrinths
Summary: What do you say when someone you never expected to see again shows up to say what you never expected to hear?

This one is was written for [livejournal.com profile] smallfandomfest in 2015. Mostly. The beginning was supposed to be the answer to the 2015 Snowflake Challenge's Day 6 but the opening paragraph wouldn't yield to anything larger. I ended up using it as a jumping-off point for the fic for the challenge just because I liked Mildmay's description of the lighthouse. The rest of it is because I wasn't satisfied with one of the plot threads I felt was left dangling - though to be fair it is the kind of thing that happens in real life - and because, dammit, Felix and Mildmay deserve a happy ending!

Well, reasonably. It is Doctrine of Labyrinths, after all. I'm sure something will try to possess or kill them soon.

Decisions
Summary: Erestor decides what to do with his day.

Written for the 2014 February Fanon Busters challenge on [livejournal.com profile] lotr_community. The idea of Erestor spending all his time inside and buried in paperwork never sat right with me: if you're immortal you're probably going to develop process improvement at some point, after all.

Honesty
Summary: Cas has his reasons for letting Dean see what he does.

Sad drabble based around Dean and Future!Cas' conversation in the truck during 'The End'. Future!Cas breaks my heart, he's the wreck and ruin of everything Castiel was, and I'm firmly convinced that the entire conversation in question came about because he knows that and wants to change it.

13. Do you prefer canon or fanon when you write? Has writing fanfic for a fandom changed the way you see some or even all of the original source material?

Usually I prefer canon, but I'd incorporate fanon if it made sense or were useful to the plot, or wasn't annoying me. Fanon tends to run the risk of taking one trait from a character (or even making some up) and blowing it all out of proportion. For example, in the early years (and possibly still, I haven't been paying attention) of Supernatural, fandom latched on to Dean's liking for pie and made it into a constantly referenced obsession. I counted once on a rewatch, up to the end of S3, and I think he mentioned pie maybe five times? And there was a sharp increase in S3 as the writers caught on.

Writing fanfic for a fandom has changed the way I saw a character, slightly, yes. When the idea for what would become the opening of To Chain Together popped into my head, I wondered what Mildmay would have to do at a lighthouse. Felix has his research, but Corambis clearly has a thing for magical machinery so I didn't think there would be a whole lot of upkeep or whatever for Mildmay to do. Maybe some stuff around the house, but he wouldn't have to light the lighthouse every night, probably. Plus, you can only do house repairs for so long. That ties into an underlying theme of the series: everyone, including Mildmay, tends to focus on Felix instead of thinking about Mildmay's needs. To be fair, Felix is hard to ignore. I did some thinking about Mildmay and his actions through the series, and realized he has a semi-suppressed nurturing streak. So I gave him a garden.

9. Pairings – For each of the fandoms from day two, what are your three favorite pairings to write?

Hmm, that's a tough one since I never seem to write pairings.

Transformers...can't really think of any. There were canon couples - Optimus Prime and Elita One, Ironhide and Chromia, Firestar and Inferno, Spike and Carly, Arcee and Springer - but I'm not particularly interested in writing any of them.

For Supernatural, Dean & Castiel. I'm quite convinced that Castiel is utterly in love with Dean, but I don't think it's sexual (I read angels as asexual (generally, yes, I see you there, Gabriel) but that doesn't necessarily equal aromantic) and I am certain he has no idea what to do about it. I guess Sam and Jessica and John and Mary Winchester since  they're canon? For a show with so many chicks of the week there aren't a lot I'd want to come back to. I would have liked to have seen more of Sarah from the creepy painting episode in season 1 though.

Lord of the Rings is another one where I'm kind of coming up blank. I do like fic with Elrond and Celebrian, and I'm definitely a fan of Erestor and Glorfindel. I like Celeborn and I'm not as sold on Galadriel but I do like her in the hands of the right writer.

In the Doctrine of Labyrinths we have a number of canon couples but none of them seem to end well. Sometimes that just means a breakup and sometimes it means horrible tragedy. I wrote To Chain Together about the aftermath of the end of Felix and Shannon's relationship, as canon didn't quite satisfy me. There's also Mildmay and Mehitabel (breakup), Felix and Gideon (horrible tragedy), and Felix and Malkar (nightmarishly abusive). Felix and Mildmay (incest) was more than hinted at through most of the series but I'm not sure it applies by the end, if that makes sense without spoiling the books for you.

The Iron Elves didn't really have couples. Konowa wound up with someone, and his parents were in the novels but one of them was a squirrel at the time.

Yeah. It makes sense in context.

3. For each of the fandoms from day two, what were your favorite characters to write?

  1. Transformers: It's been so long I honestly don't remember.

  2. Supernatural: Castiel. Because I can sympathise with a poor confused bastard who doesn't quite understand humanity. The drabble I wrote about Future!Cas, Honesty, is still one of my favorite things I've written.

  3. Lord of the Rings: Erestor, who's actually a character I fell in love with via other people's fanfic, which is also the reason I ship him with Glorfindel. Erestor's an interesting character to write because he only had one line in the books, we don't know that much about him, so despite that he's canon you can pretty much give him whatever characterization you want.

  4. Doctrine of Labyrinths: Mildmay. Writing Mildmay means you don't have to worry as much about grammar (he doesn't have poor grammar, necessarily, it's just very very casual) and you can swear a lot. Mildmay is a good character to write when you're frustrated.

  5. The Iron Elves Trilogy: Well, by default it'd have to be Konowa Swift-Dragon, since he's the only character in the one drabble I wrote for it. XD

hoursgoneby: (Hourglass)
Master post is here.

2. Name the fandoms you've written in, and how much you've written in that fandom, and if you still write in it.
Let's see...

  1. Transformers, when I was younger, but that's all offline now and either intentionally deleted or wiped from existence by a harddrive that turned into a brick.

  2. Supernatural, five fics and a couple of WiPs, though I haven't written anything in SPN since mid-season 5. I really should upload those to AO3 at some point.

  3. Lord of the Rings, three fics, including one I just finished recently for the LOTR Community September Challenge.

  4. Doctrine of Labyrinths, one fic, and I can't say if I'd keep writing in DoL or not because I just find it so hard to write Felix and do him justice.

  5. The Iron Elves, one fic, written for a Snowflake Challenge back in 2013, and I don't know that I'd write more because I find the story pretty complete as-is.

When you see this, share 3 lines from each of 3 WIPs

Uh..I only have 2 WiPs (for fanfic and that I'm willing to share) so should I only do 2 lines? If not, we're good. If yes, bonus line!

Snippet #1: From Doctrine of Labyrinths, post-series. I started for the Fandom Snowflake Challenge Day 6 and I'm still working:

Felix was pretty okay with being near the ocean, mostly because he didn’t go outside and look at it. Virtuer Hutchence hadn’t been kidding around when he’d said there were centuries worth of records, and Felix seemed determined to go through every shelf and box before he saw sun again. I dragged him out for food and sleep often as I could but half the time he’d go on about some new hocus thing he’d found until I was ready to put him back again.

Snippet 2: From Supernatural, AU after mid-season-5 and, frankly, most likely doomed to stay WiP:

Dean tossed his own duffel down on one of the beds, and yanked the zipper open, making a show out of searching for something. They'd been having this argument all the way from their last hunt in the Midwest all the way out here to the California coast. Dean was tired, in a way that only months of little sleep and long hours of driving could make you, and going over this again wasn't something he particularly wanted to do.

Category: F/M, M/M
Summary: How could he tell his father that his son was a coward? Afraid of a woman? He couldn't. He wouldn't. It was as simple as that. An owl hooted and had to watch its prey scurry into the leaves as Isgrimnur shouted out his frustration.

WynCatastrophe and her Doctrine of Labyrinths fanfic Comparative Thaumaturgy. It's a WiP (I'm subscribed to it on AO3) but worth hanging around for! She has the voices of Mildmay and Felix down, and even the OC feels like they belong in the universe. It's set post-series, and really has that 'continuing the series' feel to it.

1. I'd love to see more fanfic and fanart for smaller fandoms, especially:

  • The Goblin Emperor

  • The Doctrine of Labyrinths

  • The Bone Key

  • James Asher

  • The Iron Elves (Seriously, there is 1 fic for this and I wrote it; won't someone come play with me? :P)

  • Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn

2. Fic/pic recs for any of the above. I've been through AO3, Fanfiction.net and just general web searches but had little luck.

3. And for anyone reading this, something for you: I want you to go do something that makes you happy. Anything, fandom-related or not. Spoil yourself a little, you deserve it!

Nothing much to say. Discovered The Doctrine of Labyrinths, because apparently tiny fandoms are my thing now. I, um, may have gone on a book-buying spree too and been working my way through that. (And people keep taking me to bookstores! People who give me funny looks when I say "but I have a huge pile of books I haven't read! I shouldn't buy any more" and then I give in and go anyway.)

Anyway, will look at getting back to things now.
