WynCatastrophe and her Doctrine of Labyrinths fanfic Comparative Thaumaturgy. It's a WiP (I'm subscribed to it on AO3) but worth hanging around for! She has the voices of Mildmay and Felix down, and even the OC feels like they belong in the universe. It's set post-series, and really has that 'continuing the series' feel to it.

Appreciation? I need to comment more, but I'll gladly click the Kudos button. I've got a rec list I need to get back to as well. I also like AO3's subscription feature; it's flattering to know someone likes your stuff so much they want to be notified immediately when something new comes in.

Day 10

Stretch yourself a little and try something new. Go play in a new fandom or with a new pairing. Try working in a new medium. Or check out some fanworks that are new to you. (The recs from Day 1 might be a good place to start!) Leave a comment in this post saying you did it.

I was hoping to cross this with my entry for day 6, but that isn't cooperating and while I know there's no deadline, leaving things unfinished bothers me - for a while, anyway, until I get distracted by something else - so I went with something I've been meaning to try for a while: podfic.

Gentlemen's Night Out by oshun over on Silmarillion Writers' Guild was the one I chose. (Honestly, I recommend that fic in whatever format, especially if you think Laws and Customs of the Eldar would make immortal life a bit...bland.) I'm not sold on podfic yet - I can appreciate the work that goes into it, and that isn't meant as a shot against the one above by any means - but may try out a few more before I make up my mind.

Day 11

Well, I haven't been as active in fandom and creating as I would maybe have liked to be, so it's a short list and largely related to original fiction, but:

Wikipedia - I know, I know, but if I just need to check, say, the history of tools or clothing, or the basics of an illness or injury it's good enough.

TVTropes - In addition to their Useful Notes sections, the pages on the works themselves can be useful if you need to look up something about the material you're working with without having to risk checking it and winding up watching or reading it and not working on what you started out with.

Google - If Wikipedia doesn't have the information, or the depth of information, I want I head to Google. Someone, somewhere, knows the history of crinolines, or the frequency of inside shutters in old houses and they may not have been interested enough to put it on Wikipedia.

Fan wikis, if they're available. One of the downsides of smaller fandoms though is they tend not to have large wikis, if at all, and when they have one it's often not been updated recently.

Pixlr.com - This is an online graphics editor I use for doing simple things, admittedly largely at work but it technically could be used for fan stuff. It's pretty much a Photoshop clone, but not as powerful.

GIMP - A much more powerful Photoshop clone, it's more complex than Pixlr and needs to be downloaded to be used but it has a lot more features and you can do more with it.

My husband. No, really. He's a fellow nerd and has an encyclopedic knowledge of whatever fandoms he's interested in. (The trick can, in fact, be getting him to stop.)

And this reminds me, I need to go back and finish up on days 6 and 10!

Day 9
In your own space, talk about what surprises you about fandom. It could be a pairing or fandom you never thought you'd like. A fanwork type you never knew existed. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Talk about a talent you discovered you have. Finding folks who are geekier than you, or on the flip side, finding out that there is no one geekier than you. A person who changed your life. The possibilities are endless. Big or small, what unexpected surprises have you found?

There are actually a few people who changed my life in fandom. Finding fandom in my mid-teens meant that for the first time I met other people who were like me, and that helped give me a sense of belonging I'd never really had before. I met my best friend through fandom, when she posted on a newsgroup looking for fellow fans in her area. Fandom brought my husband and I together: we met through mutual fans and while he didn't notice my interest at first (being perfectly fair here, I was underage and he's older than I am by enough I was illegal) we eventually made plans to try and roadtrip to a convention with the abovementioned friend. Those plans fell through, but from there we started hanging out together, then dating, and we have now been together for seventeen years and married for ten this summer. Never in my life did I expect that to happen.

Day 8

Well, I'm smart, imaginative, and people tell me I'm funny. Cuddly, too, although that's a bit harder to show over the Internet. :P

Day 7

In your own space, share your love for a trope, cliché, kink, motif, or theme. (More than one is okay, too.) Tell us about it, tell us why you love it, give us some examples and recs. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Trope: Pretty much anything that falls under the umbrella of Cosmic Horror Story. Anything by Lovecraft is an example and if you really want a mindscrew, go for Robert W. Chambers' The King in Yellow. For me this trope works better in print, because in visual medium there's too much of a tendency to show instead of hint and cosmic horror is always worse when you have to use your imagination.

Cliché: Love at First Sight, although I prefer it when people fall for each other but we still see them have to work at it to maintain the relationship. You know, like in real life. I even like it if the relationship doesn't last - hey, just because you don't end up with the person doesn't mean you didn't love them. It just means it didn't work out. Enchanted has a good treatment of this: it's not impossible but you should get to know the person you've just fallen for before committing to them for your entire future.

Kink: Long hair. Mmm. Especially on men. Examples would be Lord of the Rings, of course, and A Brother's Price which, taking place in a gender-flipped world, has long hair as a masculine trait and short as a feminine one. I also have a voice kink, although that one's a little harder to pin down and define. Some voices should do it for me and don't, some are unexpected.

Motif: Pretty much any fairy tale motif, especially if they involve dragons and/or female characters who win through by being clever. One of the first books I ever had headcanon for was The Paper Bag Princess by Robert Munsch; I liked to pretend that at the end of the book Elizabeth managed to rescue another princess and they went off and had adventures together. Another favorite is All-Kinds-of-Fur, also known as Donkeyskin, Catskin, Cap O' Rushes and more. All-Kinds-of-Fur is beautifully put together as a comic by Erstwhile and is available here. (Seriously, check out Erstwhile, they do gorgeous work.)

Theme: Works that deal with the balance between good and evil. There's a lot of these, especially in fantasy. Eve Forward's Villains by Necessity is downstairs in my 'to-read' pile and it looks to have an interesting treatment: the good guys have won over, screwing up the balance and from there it does what it says on the tin. On the opposite side of the spectrum, I also like works that don't have a great overarching stop-the-world-from-ending theme but deal more with people and their development. I'm going to rec The Goblin Emperor for this because it's an amazing book and deserves all the love. In fact, that link will take you to an online excerpt of the first four chapters and I would be happy to see people come back and comment 'dammit, now I have to read the rest of it!' :)

Day 5

I started fandom young, when my mother sat me in front of Star Trek as a toddler, a reward I received in lieu of a nap if I behaved myself and the episode was appropriate. I was pretty much on my own until I met a fellow Star Trek fan in junior high, and from there, although in separate incidents, met other fans in my area and started hanging out and going to conventions. Online fandom came along when we got our first home internet connection when I was in late high school and I've been here ever since, although I do tend to lurk.

I've had a few identities over the years. The first I changed because the name I had was too long for whatever I was signing up for at the time. The next few I changed both because I was done with those fandoms and because I wanted to distance myself from that identity. (Do you want to remember and be associated with what you wrote when you were 16? I don't.) This one, Hours, was created not because I wanted to distance myself from an identity, necessarily, but because I found a link to my other LJ on a relative's computer and went 'oh god no'.

The name, Hours Gone By, comes from my favorite line from Blind Guardian's The Bard Song: Hours gone by/And I close my eyes. There's no real meaning behind it besides the fact that I like it and it always stands out in the song for me. But hey: call me Hours. :)

Day Four

Comment to someone you haven't ever interacted with before or introduce yourself to someone you've interacted with and friend/follow them. Afterwards, leave a comment in this post with the equivalent of "I did it!"

It doesn't have to be anything complex - it can be feedback for a fanwork or discussing something you might have in common or even simply admiring their icon. The point is to reach out to someone you normally wouldn't and connect with them, even if it's only for the briefest moment.

Well, I've commented on a few people's challenge posts, even filled a few wishlist requests, so I'll call this one done. :)

Day 3

In your own space, talk about your creative process - from what inspires you to what motivates you to how you manage to break through blocks. Does your process change depending on the type of creating you're doing? Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Usually when I'm creating something I get the idea first - sparked off a thought, or a dream, or a suggestion by someone - and work it through as I go. Sometimes I'll sit down and plan beforehand, but usually it's more stream-of-consciousness. I'll have a sequence of events, or a visual, in my head and I try to get that down. Sometimes this works very well, others...well my NaNo this year fell apart because I got partway through and my characters started arguing the flaws in the plot! But better to find the flaws before anyone sees it than after.

It also depends on what I'm doing; informal or creative writing, graphics, and posts are almost always stream-of-consciousness. If I'm writing something for work, such as a proposal or training document, I'll sit down and structure an outline first, even if it's just a few bullet points on a notepad. Even then, I may stray from the outline depending on how the doc in question works out as I go. If I'm worldbuilding ahead of time (which is rare) I'll try and write down backstory first, and/or call a friend and go "okay, so...!" and brainstorm with or bounce ideas off them. When I'm sharing a project (fan related or professional) I will always create an outline and make sure to confer with others before making changes to it, just to make sure everyone's on the same track.

When I'm stuck, I always go the stream-of-consciousness route. It may or may not be related to what I wanted to work on and I may not keep it, but the important thing about writing is to write.

Day 2

In your own space, create a list of at least three fannish things you'd love to receive, something you've wanted but were afraid to ask for - a fannish wish-list of sorts. So these are largely repeats from last year: like I said, not a big year for creativity. But hell, doesn't make me any less pleased with them.

The idea of Erestor spending all his time inside and buried in paperwork never sat right with me: if you're immortal you're probably going to develop process improvement at some point, after all. One of the few things I managed to actually write and finish last year, the rest being non-fandom related.

deancastiel. I don't even remember where this came from, but I think I managed to take both characters, drop them into an entirely different situation, and still keep them IC. (This is something I struggle with, and betas are wonderful, beautiful people.)

Honesty
Summary: Cas has his reasons for letting Dean see what he does.

Sad little drabble based around Dean and Future!Cas' conversation in the truck during 'The End'. Future!Cas breaks my heart, he's the wreck and ruin of everything Castiel was, and I'm firmly convinced that the entire conversation in question came about because he knows that and wants to change it.
