9. Pairings – For each of the fandoms from day two, what are your three favorite pairings to write?

Hmm, that's a tough one since I never seem to write pairings.

Transformers...can't really think of any. There were canon couples - Optimus Prime and Elita One, Ironhide and Chromia, Firestar and Inferno, Spike and Carly, Arcee and Springer - but I'm not particularly interested in writing any of them.

For Supernatural, Dean & Castiel. I'm quite convinced that Castiel is utterly in love with Dean, but I don't think it's sexual (I read angels as asexual (generally, yes, I see you there, Gabriel) but that doesn't necessarily equal aromantic) and I am certain he has no idea what to do about it. I guess Sam and Jessica and John and Mary Winchester since  they're canon? For a show with so many chicks of the week there aren't a lot I'd want to come back to. I would have liked to have seen more of Sarah from the creepy painting episode in season 1 though.

Lord of the Rings is another one where I'm kind of coming up blank. I do like fic with Elrond and Celebrian, and I'm definitely a fan of Erestor and Glorfindel. I like Celeborn and I'm not as sold on Galadriel but I do like her in the hands of the right writer.

In the Doctrine of Labyrinths we have a number of canon couples but none of them seem to end well. Sometimes that just means a breakup and sometimes it means horrible tragedy. I wrote To Chain Together about the aftermath of the end of Felix and Shannon's relationship, as canon didn't quite satisfy me. There's also Mildmay and Mehitabel (breakup), Felix and Gideon (horrible tragedy), and Felix and Malkar (nightmarishly abusive). Felix and Mildmay (incest) was more than hinted at through most of the series but I'm not sure it applies by the end, if that makes sense without spoiling the books for you.

The Iron Elves didn't really have couples. Konowa wound up with someone, and his parents were in the novels but one of them was a squirrel at the time.

Yeah. It makes sense in context.

3. For each of the fandoms from day two, what were your favorite characters to write?

  1. Transformers: It's been so long I honestly don't remember.

  2. Supernatural: Castiel. Because I can sympathise with a poor confused bastard who doesn't quite understand humanity. The drabble I wrote about Future!Cas, Honesty, is still one of my favorite things I've written.

  3. Lord of the Rings: Erestor, who's actually a character I fell in love with via other people's fanfic, which is also the reason I ship him with Glorfindel. Erestor's an interesting character to write because he only had one line in the books, we don't know that much about him, so despite that he's canon you can pretty much give him whatever characterization you want.

  4. Doctrine of Labyrinths: Mildmay. Writing Mildmay means you don't have to worry as much about grammar (he doesn't have poor grammar, necessarily, it's just very very casual) and you can swear a lot. Mildmay is a good character to write when you're frustrated.

  5. The Iron Elves Trilogy: Well, by default it'd have to be Konowa Swift-Dragon, since he's the only character in the one drabble I wrote for it. XD

Master post is here.

2. Name the fandoms you've written in, and how much you've written in that fandom, and if you still write in it.
Let's see...

  1. Transformers, when I was younger, but that's all offline now and either intentionally deleted or wiped from existence by a harddrive that turned into a brick.

  2. Supernatural, five fics and a couple of WiPs, though I haven't written anything in SPN since mid-season 5. I really should upload those to AO3 at some point.

  3. Lord of the Rings, three fics, including one I just finished recently for the LOTR Community September Challenge.

  4. Doctrine of Labyrinths, one fic, and I can't say if I'd keep writing in DoL or not because I just find it so hard to write Felix and do him justice.

  5. The Iron Elves, one fic, written for a Snowflake Challenge back in 2013, and I don't know that I'd write more because I find the story pretty complete as-is.

Day 2

In your own space, create a list of at least three fannish things you'd love to receive, something you've wanted but were afraid to ask for - a fannish wish-list of sorts. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your wish-list if you feel comfortable doing so. Maybe someone will grant a wish. Check out other people's posts. Maybe you will grant a wish. If any wishes are granted, we'd love it if you link them to this post.

1. I'd love to see more fanfic and fanart for smaller fandoms, especially:

  • The Goblin Emperor

  • The Doctrine of Labyrinths

  • The Bone Key

  • James Asher

  • The Iron Elves (Seriously, there is 1 fic for this and I wrote it; won't someone come play with me? :P)

  • Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn

2. Fic/pic recs for any of the above. I've been through AO3, Fanfiction.net and just general web searches but had little luck.

3. And for anyone reading this, something for you: I want you to go do something that makes you happy. Anything, fandom-related or not. Spoil yourself a little, you deserve it!

Day 10

1) Finrod's song battle with Sauron done as dueling guitars. Picture, fanvid, fic...if anyone wants to give me these two rockin' out, I can reward you with joyous squees and eternal gratitude. :P

2) Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn fanfic recs. (There isn't much. I've probably found what there is. But I can try! Perhaps there is some small, not significant to Google, archive I've not found. One never knows.) Or new fanfics, if anyone would like to stretch their wings...

3) Take a look at my tags and let me know if there are any amazing fanworks I just have to be aware of. Don't worry that it might not be to my taste: the worst that will happen is I'll say "thank you for the rec" and leave it at that. Or, if you ask me what I thought, "thank you for the rec, but it wasn't my cup of tea".

4) A vid for The Hobbit done to Blind Guardian's The Bard Song - The Hobbit. (There are two versions of The Bard Song. Both are amazing.)

5) An Iron Elves Trilogy fandom to exist. This one, this is the "I want a pony for Christmas!" of this particular list, I think, but you'll never get it if you don't at least ask. ;)

Day 7

In your own space, create a fanwork. A drabble, a ficlet, a podfic, or an icon, art or meta or a rec list. A picspam. Something. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Title: A Night in Exile
Fandom: The Iron Elves Trilogy
Character(s): Konowa Swift Dragon
Summary: After murdering a corrupt Viceroy, Konowa Swift Dragon, former commander of the Iron Elves regiment, hides out in the one place he hates: the forest. It’s entirely possible the forest hates him back. Drabble.

***

Konowa wrapped his cloak around himself, burrowed into the pile of pine branches that served as his bed, and tried to sleep.

A root he swore wasn’t there before pressed into his hip. He shifted, and another miraculously appeared. Konowa rolled onto his back and glared up at the tree he’d made his bed under. The leaves rustled in the night breeze and dropped water on him.

Konowa took a deep breath, and rolled onto his side again to try and sleep. He couldn’t go back, so he’d just have to get used to the roots, rocks and damned trees.

Day 3
In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you did not create. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so. See if you can rec fanworks that are less likely to be praised: tiny fandoms, rare pairings, fanworks other than stories, lesser-known kinks or tropes. Find fanworks that have few to no comments, or creators new to a particular fandom who maybe aren't well known or appreciated. Appreciate them.

Sought, wrought, and shaped to purpose by Rikku
Fanfic based on Patrick Rothfuss' Kingkiller Chronicle. It's the story, untold in the novels on which it is based, of how protagonist Kvothe met his faen companion Bast. It's a perfect description of their meeting, and the author nailed the tone and voice of the novels.

Catharsis by murderousfiligree
Another fanfic from the Kingkiller Chronicle fandom. Tempi comes from a culture where playing music in pubic is considered obscene, an idea he struggles with (canonically) when traveling with Kvothe, who is a musician among many many other things. This story details Tempi's internal struggle with his desire to hear and learn music, and what he has always been taught about doing so.

I'm So Glad I'm Standing Here Today by karrenia_rune
From Tad Williams' near-fandom-less Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn trilogy. (Really. There's, like, four fics out there, which is a crying damn shame.) Simon and Miriamele work on their relationship, and rebuilding the world.

I wanted to find something from The Iron Elves Trilogy by Chris Evans (not the actor) but there seems to be absolutely zero. Look, let me put it this way: I bought the first book on sale because the coffee shop next door to work sells used and discounted books and I like to save the fantasy and SF from a lonely and dusty fate. I wasn't even through the first chapter before I went to the bookstore to buy the next two, and I devoured all three in a weekend. If anyone wants to check it out, or talk about it, or can point me to a fandom, please do let me know.
