22. Have you ever participated in a fest or a Big Bang? If so, write about your favorite experience in relation to one. If not, are there any you've thought about doing? And if not, why not?

To Chain Together was written for Small Fandom Fest earlier this year, and I've done a few challenges through [livejournal.com profile] lotr_community and one for [livejournal.com profile] snowflchallenge. I've never signed up for a Big Bang, though I did look at [livejournal.com profile] yuletide this year. It just looked like too much. I tried NaNoWriMo last year and it ended up falling apart because a) I didn't have the interest to write 1,667 or more words per day and b) the plot didn't make sense to the point the characters started to argue with me.

I don't know that there's a favorite experience. Not to say that fests and Big Bangs and such are bad, but I've been having a problem writing for the past couple of years and have had to pretty much force things out.  I'm hoping increasing my antidepresssant will help again, as it did when I first started them four years ago. Some people find themselves less creative on psych meds and that's completely valid, but it seems to work the opposite way for me. At least, I'm trying NaNo again this year (see the shiny icon!) and so far it seems to be going better. Far too early to tell, though, as we're only 3 days in.

Nooo, it's over! :(

Day 15

In your own space, create your own challenge. What’s something you want to see more people doing in fandom? Is there something fun you’ve tried that you think other people would enjoy if they gave it a go? Dare your friends to try it out, and have fun with it. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Find something you like but never sought out a fandom for, and look for fanworks for it. If there aren't any, or the fandom is small, help it along: create some fanworks of your own for it, or encourage the creators along by leaving feedback. (Hey, not everyone is going to be inspired to create for all their fandoms, and that's just fine.)

Keep being awesome! *blows kisses*
hoursgoneby: (Hourglass)
Day 14

In your own space, write a love letter. Write it Fandom in general, to a particular fandom, to a trope, a relationship, a character, or to your flist. Share you love and squee as loud as you want to. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Dear Fandom,

You've been with me as long as I can remember, through bad times and good. You've cheered me and supported me, laughed and cried with me. You have been my companion and my crutch. We've drifted apart at times, but always come back together, just as strong as before.

I love you,

Hours

Day 13
In your own space, talk about setting yourself a fannish goal. Big or small, it doesn't matter. Some great examples include: complete a bingo, sign-up for a Big Bang, write that fic you've been thinking about for years, podfic that story that you love, make a fanmix for your fandom, post that bit of meta or reclist you keep postponing. Maybe resolve to be better at leaving feedback, or answering comments. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Easiest one yet. :) A couple of the things I want to do are even hit on in the prompt!

I want to start keeping a rec list, or at least posting fic recs when I find something good. I really must start being better at leaving feedback, since that's pretty much the currency of fandom, and telling myself that 'short reviews are OK. Not everything needs an analysis'. (Curse you, high-school English classes!)

Mostly, I want to start writing again. I know I have some unfinished stuff in my Gdocs somewhere I should really get around to completing. Clinical depression kind of killed my urge to write, but now that my brain chemistry seems to be sorting itself out thanks to time + antidepressants, I want to get back into it again. Truthfully, I've been a bit nervous about it (I'm less shy IRL than online, if that makes any sense), but participating in the challenge and seeing all you lovely enthusiastic people has helped ease that. *hugs to you all*

Day 12

In your own space, talk about what you think the future holds for fandom. What are your hopes and dreams for fandom? Do you have any predictions about what the next five years holds for fandom?

Well, this is an interesting one! Fandom has certainly become more accepted and diverse than I ever expected it to be when I first started way back in high school. We've gone from being limited to people you could find in your area and snail-mail 'zines, to plain-text fic and discussion on newsgroups, to blogs and comms, and now there are podfics, fanvids, and social media sites like Twitter and Tumblr. You can geek out over something with someone from the other side of the world. You can buy geeky paraphernalia from online stores like ThinkGeek or fanmade things on Etsy. There are even physical stores in places, like Geek Chic. When you say "I like 'x'" to people you're more likely to be asked "have you see 'y' too?" instead of being made fun of for being a nerd. People take their kids to conventions and the comic book store, where there are fannish activities aimed at children. This is relatively new, and it's wonderful to see parents sharing their enthusiasms with their kids, and kids being given a place that says 'yes, it's OK for you to be a little different and crazy about this'.

Fandom is as old as the human need to create. Some of the later additions to the Epic of Gilgamesh, one of the oldest surviving works of literature, bring Enkidu back from the dead and are very clearly fix-it fic for the original ending! Mythology develops as one person or group of people create a story to explain their world, and others take the events and characters and spin them into new tales. Fandom is a creation of humanity's need for interaction and commonality.

When IRC became available, we created chat rooms. When blogging platforms arrived, we used them to create communities and share our works and the works of others. Social media let us do that even faster. 3D modeling and video editing software let us create fanvids. With recording software came podfics and vlogs. As new technology becomes available, fans immediately seek to adapt it to expressing and sharing their love of fandom. The future of fandom lies in the technology that is to come, the tools we will have and how we use them to expand and express the works of our imagination.

Day 11

Stretch yourself a little and try something new. Go play in a new fandom or with a new pairing or trope. Try creating a different kind of fanwork. Or check out some types of fanworks that are new to you. (The recs from Day 1, Day 3, and Day 9 might be a good place to start!) Leave a comment in this post saying you did it.

I've been in online fandom for...well, if it was a kid, it'd be in uni. So there's not a whole lot out there I haven't given a try. I ended up sticking with fanfic, because reading is pretty much my favorite thing ever, but in a fandom for a non-fantasy, non-SF book: L.M. Montgomery's The Blue Castle. No particular reason, it just happened to be what my brain came up with for random association. Found a dozen or so fics on A03 (what IS it with me and the teeny fandoms lately?) and these are the four that really stood out:

A Mouse Gnawing in Her Chest, by Thia
Summary: In a shameful, private little corner of her heart, Cecily raised up an altar to unbeautiful, skittish, kind Valancy Stirling.
A sweet and sad short fic about need and unrequited love.

Moonlight Shining, by Amyfortuna
Summary: Barney remembers a night long ago, the first night after his marriage to Valancy.
I like first-time fics, and this is a lovely one, reading like a real love story and not a Harlequin. Unusually, both parties are virgins and even more unusually, it's told from the man's point of view.

Muskegee Twilight, by Sangerin
Summary: Secrets fell from each girl's lips to float out on the grey summer air.
An absolute tearjerker about a canon death. How the artist managed that in only 100 words I don't know.

Nor Custom Stale, by slightlykylie
Summary: Another look at Olive Stirling.
This is an excellent behind-the-scenes look at a character who is intentionally one-dimensional in the book, where she serves as a foil to the protagonist. The protagonist was always harangued to be more like her cousin Olive: here we see the mirror of that her cousin experienced.

Day 10

In your own space, create a list of at least three fannish things you'd love to receive, something you've wanted but were afraid to ask for - a fannish wish-list of sorts. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your wish-list if you feel comfortable doing so. Maybe someone will grant a wish. Check out other people's posts. Maybe you will grant a wish. If any wishes are granted, we'd love it if you link them to this post.

1) Finrod's song battle with Sauron done as dueling guitars. Picture, fanvid, fic...if anyone wants to give me these two rockin' out, I can reward you with joyous squees and eternal gratitude. :P

2) Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn fanfic recs. (There isn't much. I've probably found what there is. But I can try! Perhaps there is some small, not significant to Google, archive I've not found. One never knows.) Or new fanfics, if anyone would like to stretch their wings...

3) Take a look at my tags and let me know if there are any amazing fanworks I just have to be aware of. Don't worry that it might not be to my taste: the worst that will happen is I'll say "thank you for the rec" and leave it at that. Or, if you ask me what I thought, "thank you for the rec, but it wasn't my cup of tea".

4) A vid for The Hobbit done to Blind Guardian's The Bard Song - The Hobbit. (There are two versions of The Bard Song. Both are amazing.)

5) An Iron Elves Trilogy fandom to exist. This one, this is the "I want a pony for Christmas!" of this particular list, I think, but you'll never get it if you don't at least ask. ;)
hoursgoneby: (Hourglass)
Day 9

In your own space, rec at least 3 fanworks you thought you wouldn't like (because they weren't your fandom or they pushed against your boundaries or you thought you just wouldn't be interested) but you ended up loving. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Oh, good, this is so much easier than yesterday's! My psyche needs a break from all that extroversion.

Dark Prince ~ The Darkness Has Its Own Light by Spiced Wine.
"A half-elven OC who's the son of Sauron, and has purple eyes. Really." That was my first, doubtful, thought when I encountered a description of Vanimórë, the protagonist of Spiced Wine's Dark Prince series and 'verse. I didn't read it the first few times I saw it referenced, because I've just seen so many OCs of this type and generally don't find them to be interesting or unique. Then one night I had a few minutes to kill before bed and thought 'why not?'.

I ended up going to work the next day on about three hours sleep. It was nothing like I'd expected, and I'm so very pleased to have been wrong! You can get started at the link up there, but please do heed the chapter warnings.

Nightfall in Middle Earth by Blind Guardian
A power metal concept album based on The Silmarillion that just blew me away the first time I heard it. I had some doubts about reccing it since it's done professionally and commercially available, but then realized that was silly because those things don't mean it's not a fannish labour of love. I first learned about it when I was surfing through TVTropes (can't remember which trope) and found a link to the song 'Time Stands Still (At the Iron HIll)', about Fingolfin's duel with Morgoth. Metal, concept albums, and Tolkien are certainly all things I enjoy, but...Tolkien's work explored through power metal? Well...why not? So I listened to it.

Then I listened to the rest of the album.

Then I bought it. (OK, I listened to the rest of the band's work, and bought a box set containing Blind Guardian's entire discography up to they changed labels. And I have not regretted it.)

The Call of Cthulu
A short film based on the work of H.P. Lovecraft by the H.P. Lovecraft Historical Society. Now, films based on Lovecraft's work range from just bad, to entertainingly schlocky at best. Lovecraft's stories rarely describe the entirety of what the characters are seeing, and when they do it's something that would be difficult and/or expensive to include. His work is largely monologue, with very little dialogue making it hard to adapt to a modern film without lots and lots of rewriting - more, I think, than a major studio would be willing to put in to something they wouldn't expect to have much of an audience. With this in mind, I was not expecting great things.

BUT. It turns out that making a silent film eliminates a lot of the problems above! You watch the characters act and react, and what explanations and dialogue is needed goes on a title card. Adding to the feel that you're really watching an old silent movie are the scratches in the film, and a subtle hiss and pop to the soundtrack. It's surprisingly gripping, and does not feel like it's only 46 minutes long.

Day 8

In your own space, create a love meme for yourself. Let people tell you how amazing and awesome and loveable you really are. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so. Surf the comments and find people to give love to.

Oh, this is a hard one. Really. Bit outside my comfort zone but I hold that doing things outside one's comfort zone can be healthy. ("I'm a little nervous, but I'll push through" as opposed to someone shoving you when you're going "no, please, I really really can't.") So.

I'm a little shy about reaching out, more than a touch introverted, but I do like to talk with people. Kind of the entire purpose of fandom, right? So drop me some love. Heck, go ahead and ask questions: this is a relatively new journal that's just ramping up but I've been a fangirl for a loooong time. We might have something in common. ^_^
hoursgoneby: (Hourglass)

Day 7

In your own space, create a fanwork. A drabble, a ficlet, a podfic, or an icon, art or meta or a rec list. A picspam. Something. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Title: A Night in Exile
Fandom: The Iron Elves Trilogy
Character(s): Konowa Swift Dragon
Summary: After murdering a corrupt Viceroy, Konowa Swift Dragon, former commander of the Iron Elves regiment, hides out in the one place he hates: the forest. It’s entirely possible the forest hates him back. Drabble.

***

Konowa wrapped his cloak around himself, burrowed into the pile of pine branches that served as his bed, and tried to sleep.

A root he swore wasn’t there before pressed into his hip. He shifted, and another miraculously appeared. Konowa rolled onto his back and glared up at the tree he’d made his bed under. The leaves rustled in the night breeze and dropped water on him.

Konowa took a deep breath, and rolled onto his side again to try and sleep. He couldn’t go back, so he’d just have to get used to the roots, rocks and damned trees.

Day Six

In your own space, share a book/song/movie/tv show/fanwork/etc that changed your life. Something that impacted on your consciousness in a way that left its mark on your soul. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Star Trek
Star Trek was my introduction to science fiction, and being a fan, even if I barely remember when I first watched it. When I was two-three years old, Star Trek was broadcast on CBC during the weekdays at about the same time as my nap. I don't remember how I first got interested, or if one of my parents tried to interest me in it. But my mother made me a deal: if I was good, and if it was an appropriate episode (anything too scary was out) I could sit quietly and watch Star Trek instead of taking a nap for an hour. This was wise: campy as it can come across today, there's a reason it's stood the test of time, and that is the messages of acceptance and equality it provides.

Star Trek also provided me with an interest in computers, electronics, and machines in general. Not because of Scotty - no, even that young I knew that machines were supposed to be a 'guy thing', so that didn't really have an effect on me. There is a scene where Uhura is under the comm console fixing the circuitry - replacing parts, soldering, etc. - and not only does she not ask for help, she refuses Spock's offer of help because she's perfectly capable. I remember sitting up straight and realizing 'women can be good at machines too!' I didn't end up working in a hardware field, but that's not important. (My job has aspects of customer service, process improvement, and workflow management, if you're curious.) I was shown that I could, if I wanted to. No limits, not for me, not for anyone. Real life doesn't work that way. Not yet. But it should.
hoursgoneby: (Hourglass)
Day 5

In your own space, talk about a creator. Show us why you think they are amazing. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Curiouswombat
Curiouswombat plays in both the Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Lord of the Rings fandoms and, amazingly, has managed a fusion between the two that works so well you won't believe it. Her Returnverse begins after the end of both BtVS and LotR stories, when Dawn Summers is transplanted from California to Middle-earth, home dimension of the Key, during the climactic battle of the Buffy series finale. I have to admit, I very nearly didn't read it given the premise, but she makes it work. She is also the author of one of my favorite Xander-centric stories, Half A Sky Of Stars, taking place after the end of BtVS.

Her work can be found at Twisting the Hellmouth and Faerie: Tolkien Fanfiction.
hoursgoneby: (Hourglass)
Day 4

Comment to someone you haven't ever interacted with before or introduce yourself to someone you've interacted with and friend/follow them. Afterwards, leave a comment in this post with the equivalent of "I did it!"

It doesn't have to be anything complex - it can be feedback for a fanwork or discussing something you might have in common or even simply admiring their icon. The point is to reach out to someone you normally wouldn't and connect with them, even if it's only for the briefest moment.

Er, so I did this one sort of accidentally? (And actually on the 9th, I backdated it because having the entries out of order would bother me.) I left a review on mangacrack's A Smear of Grey Across the Sky, which is a lovely fic about Fëanáro comforting one of his youngest sons.
hoursgoneby: (Hourglass)
Day 3
In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you did not create. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so. See if you can rec fanworks that are less likely to be praised: tiny fandoms, rare pairings, fanworks other than stories, lesser-known kinks or tropes. Find fanworks that have few to no comments, or creators new to a particular fandom who maybe aren't well known or appreciated. Appreciate them.

Sought, wrought, and shaped to purpose by Rikku
Fanfic based on Patrick Rothfuss' Kingkiller Chronicle. It's the story, untold in the novels on which it is based, of how protagonist Kvothe met his faen companion Bast. It's a perfect description of their meeting, and the author nailed the tone and voice of the novels.

Catharsis by murderousfiligree
Another fanfic from the Kingkiller Chronicle fandom. Tempi comes from a culture where playing music in pubic is considered obscene, an idea he struggles with (canonically) when traveling with Kvothe, who is a musician among many many other things. This story details Tempi's internal struggle with his desire to hear and learn music, and what he has always been taught about doing so.

I'm So Glad I'm Standing Here Today by karrenia_rune
From Tad Williams' near-fandom-less Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn trilogy. (Really. There's, like, four fics out there, which is a crying damn shame.) Simon and Miriamele work on their relationship, and rebuilding the world.

I wanted to find something from The Iron Elves Trilogy by Chris Evans (not the actor) but there seems to be absolutely zero. Look, let me put it this way: I bought the first book on sale because the coffee shop next door to work sells used and discounted books and I like to save the fantasy and SF from a lonely and dusty fate. I wasn't even through the first chapter before I went to the bookstore to buy the next two, and I devoured all three in a weekend. If anyone wants to check it out, or talk about it, or can point me to a fandom, please do let me know.

hoursgoneby: (Hourglass)
Day 2
In your own space, promote three communities, challenges, blogs, pages, Twitters, Tumblrs or platforms and explain why you love them. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Henneth-Annun Story Archive: When I decided to get into LotR fic, it was the first archive specific to that fandom I found. Lots and lots of fic on there, plus a forum, challenges (none of which I've taken up - yet), and an excellent references section. Going back and reading The Silmarillion is entirely this site's fault. :P

HOW ARE YOU I'M FINE THANKS: Gingerhaze's Tumblr. Purely because Party King Thranduil is hilarious.

Faerie: Tolkien Fanfiction: I can't remember how I found this one, think I was hunting for the rest of a story I found on some archive or blog that wasn't being updated regularly any more. It updates more frequently than HASA, I think, and there's a number of wonderful authors who either post here first or post here exclusively. Plus, the Shoutbox chat thingy always has someone in it, and you don't even need to sign in if you want a quick bit of nerdery with some fellow fans. :)

Usually? I'm terrible at this type of thing. We'll see how it goes, though.

Day One

In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you have created. It can be your favorite fanworks that you've created, or fanworks you feel no one ever saw, or fanworks you say would define you as a creator. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Finally nerved myself up to do this one. These were all written/created under my old journal, before I found a link to it in a relative's computer history and went "oh, god...no" and moved them over here.

Once Around the Block
Summary: AR/AU: Castiel is a socially awkward computer programmer who is working on artificial intelligence, Dean is one of his AIs that takes on a mind of its own.

Written for the 2009 AU/Fusion Challenge over on [livejournal.com profile] deancastiel. I don't even remember where this came from, but I think I managed to take both characters, drop them into an entirely different situation, and still keep them IC. (This is something I struggle with, and betas are wonderful, beautiful people.)

Honesty
Summary: Cas has his reasons for letting Dean see what he does.

Sad little drabble based around Dean and Future!Cas' conversation in the truck during 'The End'. Future!Cas breaks my heart, he's the wreck and ruin of everything Castiel was, and I'm firmly convinced that the entire conversation in question came about because he knows that and wants to change it.

Cover graphic for [livejournal.com profile] evening_bat's ongoing AU Fullmetal Alchemist series, Courage So Rare. Does it count as a photomanip if no actual photos were manipulated? Just because I'd not done anything like this before.

I backdated this post to Jan 1, just because having the challenges out of order would bother me.
