Challenge #8

Rec at least three fanworks that you didn’t create. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Okay, let's look at my recc'd bookmarks from the past year:

Blank Page Waiting by [archiveofourown.org profile] spockandawe
You wake up early, but the drone is left on your doorstep even earlier than that. As soon as you get the alerts from your security system, it isn’t soon enough. The thing has been out there for breems already, right in full view of any curious passerby. You consider leaving it out there even longer—it would be an unmistakable insult to whoever sent it, but just vague enough to prevent them from acting on it—but that will just keep making your private business public, as more and more people see your… present.

Age by [archiveofourown.org profile] Bibliotecaria_D
Nobody thinks about surviving to old age during the war, but time passes.

[Tissue warning for this one.]

Playing the Long Odds by [archiveofourown.org profile] Bibliotecaria_D
A.k.a. the Curious Incident of Too Many Prowls. Starscream will never look at Prowl the same, but neither will Smokescreen.

[The fic offers the term 'an authority of Prowls' for any grouping of Prowls greater than two. I accept this.]

Giants of the Earth by [archiveofourown.org profile] HopeofDawn,[archiveofourown.org profile] Thefractured
How exactly do you hide a giant robot for fifty years? Very, very carefully ....

You didn't miss 5, I just didn't do it.

Challenge #6

In your own space, make a list — anything between one and ten things is a sweet spot, but don't feel constrained by that! - of things that you wish existed in fandom or elsewhere, or that you'd like someone to make for you. Are you dying for podfic of your writing? Do you need icons for a character that doesn't get much fanart? Is there a story you want to read? Are you looking for new canons to get into? Would you like a collaborator for a project?

Maybe you want more people to talk about a certain fandom with, or you'd love to trade ficlets with somebody over email. Maybe you're new to a fandom and would like some recs to start reading, or communities to join. This is the time to ask!

The challenge is going to be longer than the post, but... ^_^
  • Art of Systematic Chaos maybe-demon!Jazz sitting at his desk, chin on his hand, idly playing with the little sparks* in the bowl on his desk with the other, and smirking.
    • * Bluestreak persists in thinking of them as 'spark-like things' for his own peace of mind, but they are, in fact, sparks. Whether they're people-sparks compressed or shrunken somehow or not-people sparks is another question.
  • As always, Finrod and Sauron's song-duel done with dueling guitars.
  • Hell, just give me a rock-opera version of The Silmarillion. :P

I did not abandon this, I just...lost track. But hey, it's Snowflake so there's no deadlines. :)

Challenge #4

In your own space, set some goals for the coming year. They can be fannish or not, public or private. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.
  • I already posted a little bit about this when I did my end of year wrap-up for my writing stats in 2019 but I'd like to reach my target of 528,706 words for the year and an average daily word count of 1,458. The numbers are based on what I achieved the previous year, though since I wasn't working most of last year I'll not be surprised if I don't meet those targets, but that's okay. I'll just get a more realistic target for 2021.
  • Start doing UI design again, maybe look at putting some stuff together to sell on Redbubble. I am not a magnificent artist but I can manipulate the hell out of pixels.
  • Write some original fiction. Maybe even show it to people.
  • Finish the Unplanned Reproduction expansion I've been working on since 2018. (They're giant robots and Accidental Pregnancy doesn't really apply to the version of TF reproduction I'm using.) One of the things slowing me down here is that I said a lot of what I wanted to say with this one in All the Good Things so I guess I'll just have to find new ideas to explore. :)

Fandom Snowflake Challenge BannerChallenge #3

Pimp Your Favorite Communities, Fests or Challenges! Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Well, then! Let's go. :)

[community profile] tf_rare_pairing - a comm dedicated to rare and unusual pairings in the Transformers fandom. There are new prompts for multiple canons posted weekly. They're also on Pillowfort and Tumblr.

[community profile] prowlxjazz  - focused on the pairing of Prowl and Jazz, though they accept non-romantic J/P-centric works as well. They run challenges for the anniversary of the comm and for Hallowe'en.
[tumblr.com profile] tfspeedwriting - every week 5 prompts are posted and users are meant to write as much as they can in two hours on whichever prompts tickle their fancy. You can get a surprising amount done in that amount of time.

Jetasaurus
(Pillowfort) - I can't tell you why the idea of Grimlock/Starscream appeals to me, but it does, and if it appeals to you too, here's a comm for you. :)

MaccadamsOldOilHouse (Pillowfort) - For posting fanworks and hosting discussions. Remember the pre-Strikethrough LJ comms? That's what it's meant to recapture.

SecretSolenoid (Pillowfort) - A Transformers winter holiday gift exchange! The exchange is finished for now but comm membership remains open. They're also on Tumblr and Twitter.

[community profile] whatif_au - monthly multifandom AU challenges. So much fun! Plus you can always go back and do older challenges.

[community profile] intoabar - a crossover challenge based on the idea of two characters from different fandoms, well, walking into a bar and interacting with each other. I did this for the first time last year and it was a lot of fun. :) Signups will open again in, I think, June.

[community profile] trope_bingo - Sign-ups are open for round 14. You get/generate a bingo card and play with the tropes on it until you get some variety of bingo, anything from single line to full card. I love this one and just signed up for my third round of it. :)

[community profile] wipbigbang - A Big Bang designed to encourage you to finish those WiPs languishing on your drive. Your story needs to be a minimum of 500 words for you to sign up and the finished piece should be over 7500 words. By default, your piece(s) will go up for art claims, too.

[community profile] smallfandomfest - a biannual prompt fest, with signups currently open. I haven't participated recently because I've been focused on Transformers, which is decidedly not a small fandom, but I had a lot of fun the times I did.

[community profile] smallfandombang - a 10K word big bang for small fandoms. I haven't done this one, but it pairs with the above com so well.

[community profile] fanfic_instability - each month an intro is posted and you can do whatever you want with it in whatever fandom(s) you choose.

[community profile] spooktoberchallenge - a Hallowe'en challenge with a couple of cards of prompts that you can mix and match in whatever way you like. They welcome original work too and, like Snowflake, it's a low-stress challenge with no real deadlines.

[community profile] story_works - a variety of different challenges, for whatever fandom you like. The current challenge is a paranormal one, running until January 31.

Challenge #2

In your own space, talk about your fannish history. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

My very first fandom was Star Trek, and from a very young age: when I was a toddler, if the episode was appropriate and I'd behaved well enough, I was allowed to sit quietly and watch TOS instead of taking a nap. Then, when I was older, I fell for Transformers, M.A.S.K., Jem and the Holograms, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. (We were not allowed to watch G.I. Joe because it was 'too violent' but apparently this didn't apply to giant alien robots and mutant turtles.)

In the 90s I discovered a wider world of fandom - groups, fellow fans, and conventions - with online fandom coming into my sphere of awareness in the late 90s once I got online access at home. I tripped across the term 'shipping' when it was relatively new in the X-Files fandom. I found fanfic (art wasn't so big then, on dial-up), IRC, newsgroups, and mailing lists.

Access was sporadic in the early 00s but I was finally able to get access from home. Fandom moved to forums and Livejournal (and its clones). AO3 came into being.

In the early 10s I fell out of fandom. Life was hard and stressful and depression and what would later be diagnosed as PTSD hit hard. I had to spend time learning to manage them. I fell back in to fandom in the mid-10s, exclusively in smaller ones. Then, in 2018, I went back to my early days and started reading Transformers fanfic again. AU Yeah August happened in 2018 and I was seized with the impulse to write for it. And, that brings us to today, where I'm writing and engaging regularly again. ^_^
