Fic I Finished in June
Quite a bit because I was working to get a blackout in [community profile] trope_bingo . A lot of this was stitching together scenes I'd been poking away at throughout the round.

WIPs
Getting back to some things I put on the back burning during [community profile] trope_bingo . I did sign up for Round 13 but I'm not going for a blackout this time. Single line is fine.
  • Untitled [community profile] wipbigbang fic. I got the rough draft done, need to go back and flesh out a few scenes/plot points. The rough draft is due on the 6 and needs to be at least 80% complete and I've got that. Did not get claimed by an artist but that's ok because I was kind of anxious about that and my anxiety does not need more feeding right now, tyvm.
  • Assassin AU part 7. Because even though I would steer clear of Assassin!Prowl if he were real, as a fictional character he's fun to write. Difficult, because a lot of what he does is a potential red flag and it can be a fine line to walk, but fun.
  • Principatus 3. Probably just going to be getting Jazz set up in their new life as a corporeal entity, however permanent or impermanent that may turn out to be.
  • There are a couple more that were inspired by [community profile] trope_bingo  prompts but weren't going to get finished on time. I don't want to focus on those just yet, I want to clear out the older items from the WiP folder first.

Fic I Finished in May
Apology - May 6, 2019. That scene between Ratchet and Doctor Harding in Attack of the Autobots has bothered me for over thirty years, people.

Appetence - May 27, 2019. The fic is finished, though I've only posted the one chapter. Poor Mirage. I'll make it better for him - uh, later.

The Twelve Dancing Seekers - May 29, 2019. Replaced the Barbarian AU on which I was stuck with another Fairy Tale AU for the prompt AU: Other. My Fairy Tale Anon requested a variation on The Twelve Dancing Princesses and so this came about. With a few changes because, apart from the need to drug the hero, you could replace the twelve princesses in the original with twelve lamps and not make a huge difference. Plus the ending always bugged me: why were the princes under a curse? How did they know the princesses? Why does the princess who gets married off have to give up the prince she was involved with for this random guy? (Which yes, I recognize is a very modern approach but I didn't really get that when I was five.)

WIPs
I'm still working primarily on Trope Bingo so I'm excluding the non-TB WIPs. I almost never name things till it's posting time so these are mostly prompt names:
  • Reunion - I got stuck on what I originally wanted to do so I switched tack and managed to get something put together that I think is better than the original idea. As happens, on occasion. So while the other one's been on pause for a months now, the new version is rough-drafted and ready for editing.
  • AU: Historical - and when I say 'historical' I mean, 'I stuck them in a kingdom' because not much more history is happening so far.
  • Virgin Fic - Still going. Again, now getting past the 'awkward discussion' scene. God, I don't miss dating.
  • Free Space
  • Haunted House - Well. Haunted spaceship. Close enough.
  • Presumed Dead - still does not want to advance beyond the initial scene squirrel.
  • Rivals to Lovers - Actually NOT Prowl/Jazz. Surprise!
The one I complained about roughly a week ago is done in the rough draft, but it needs a lot more work to have some actual conflict added to it. That's fine. It's for [community profile] wipbigbang so I've got about five weeks left to do that before rough drafts are due and posting doesn't start till July 27th. I did drop the second fic I'd put in for the bang because it just was not going anywhere and I hit a major flaw in the plot the day of the withdrawal deadline, so away it went. If I can fix it I'll keep going with it later. I did get the snippets in for the other one, which means its now up for art claims, and I've never put anything up for an art claim before. I'm curious about how that's going to play out.

Urgh, I have been writing this one fic since December, I've been working on it for WiP Big Bang and I am just. Sick. Of writing. It.  I don't even know if it has merit any more or if it's nothing more than self-indulgence. The only thing that keeps me going right now is that it's almost frikkin' done.

Then I have to edit it, all ninety-some pages of it. God. Thankfully it's not actually due till the end of July and once I've got the snippets in this Saturday, I can set it aside for a bit and refresh myself. Maybe when I get back to it it won't feel like such a grind.

At least for the second WiPBB fic I realized I can drop part of my outline and actually have it make more sense. Now I just need to get enough of it one between now and Saturday that I'll have three 500-1500 word snippets to submit. That file has been open since January but I've only really been working on it since April and I'm not quite as 'please let this be done' with it. Yet.

Someone send me inspiration and coffee. Please?

  • Mind Control - Finally writing out a follow up to Attack of the Autobots because the potential fallout from that scene between Ratchet and Doctor Harding has nagged at me for over thirty years.
  • Reunion - I wasn't going to bring Half-step back into anything that happened after the war broke out but this hit me out of nowhere.
  • AU: Historical - and when I say 'historical' I mean, 'I stuck them in a kingdom' because not much more history is happening so far.

Me: I'm going to do a bunch of one-shots for this writing challenge. Just one-shots, that's it.

Also Me: Here is a series from this writing challenge.

*headdesk*

So that sequel to Impasse I mentioned? It went sideways on me, morphed from Unrequited Love to Unexpected Friendship and is now going to be at least two sequels. I've also got sequels for Student!Jazz & Wizard!Prowl, Assassin AU, and Principátus underway that I need to work on more regularly.

At least Cushion Covers is complete and TF Fairy Tale Retellings is disconnected stories where I don't have to worry about timelines or story arcs.

Impasse is now part one of Enclave and part two is undergoing a final editing pass and should be online before the weekend.

Years. Before August 2018 it had been YEARS since I'd written any fanfic or anything with a storyline at all, in fact. Now...I don't know what happened but I'm not complaining about it. :)

Yeah, February was not a great month for me, anything-wise. *sigh* But that's the lowest my productivity's been since July so I'm not gonna cry over it.

I've got a number of WIPs going now, but I'm working on Trope Bingo primarily so I'm excluding the non-TB WIPs. I never name things till it's posting time so these are all the prompts so far:
  • AU: Fairy Tale/Myth - two versions of this going, not sure which one'll be posted first
  • AU: Other (Barbarian AU, pretty much in the same state it was last month.)
  • Reunion - I wasn't going to bring Half-step back into anything that happened after the war broke out but this hit me out of nowhere.
  • Virgin Fic - Still going. A Greater than Zero Percentage brought me to my 'awkward relationship conversations' threshold for the month, it seems.
  • Free Space (Epistolary. Still in the same state it was last month.)
  • Presumed Dead - does not want to advance beyond the initial scene squirrel.
  • Deal with the Devil - Wants to advance way beyond the initial scene squirrel.
  • AU: Historical - can't decide if it wants to be a Western, or a Regency AU or some bizarre fusion of both.
  • Friends to Lovers - Prowl/Jazz. You're all wearing your shocked faces, I know. :P
  • Haunted House - Well. Haunted spaceship. Close enough.
  • Rivals to Lovers - Actually NOT Prowl/Jazz. Surprise!
I didn't skip around between prompts for AU Yeah August and October Writing Challenge so I'm not sure why I can't just settle down on one and finish it this time around. It may just be the difference in the length of time - 30 days for those (okay, ~60 in actuality) and six months for these. But, you know, as long as I get something done each day it's progress. It's not like I'm missing work targets or anything here.

That average is boosted up by a couple of days were I made it to ~3-4K words. The chart I use to track daily word count has a few major spikes in it but most of the bars are clustered between the 1K and 1.5K marks. I'd like to get that looking more even, get a more consistent daily production amount going.

I've got a number of WIPs going now, but I'm working on Trope Bingo primarily so I'm excluding the non-TB WIPs.

  • AU: Other (Barbarian AU)
  • Reunion - I wasn't going to bring Half-step back into anything that happened after the war broke out but this hit me out of nowhere.
  • Virgin Fic
  • Accidental Stimulation - writing some conversations is just as awkward as experiencing them, my god, not helped that I haven't had to negotiate a relationship in a long damn time.
  • Free Space (Epistolary)
  • Presumed Dead
I'd like to get the full card done. Nothing gets me writing like a target and/or a deadline, apparently. Because I seriously did not write any fanfic, or much of anything else, for years and then I randomly decide to do AU August and - bam! Productivity.

Back after NaNoWriMo 2018 (which I'm still happy about having finished!) I set a goal for myself to try and keep up that momentum. An average of 1,666 words/day and try to hit 50,000 words/month. I just managed to pass the 50K goal for January a whole two days early.

Oh, god, I honestly can't believe it's 2017 already. Thank whatever powers might exist that the clusterfuck of 2016 is over - and that's honestly all I want to say about the past year. Pretty sure most people agree with me.

But! Snowflake is back! :D This is honestly one of the highlights for the start of the year and I'm grateful to everyone who stepped up as a new mod because I really needed this. That's definitely not a criticism of [personal profile] akamine_chan and co-runners! I understand they've had a tough year, and I also get that if you don't have the spoons, you don't have the spoons and need to step back and engage in some self-care. There's absolutely nothing wrong with that and whoever tells you otherwise is lying. *hugs for you all*

Fandom Snowflake Challenge bannerDay 1

In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you have created. It can be your favorite fanworks that you've created, or fanworks you feel no one ever saw, or fanworks you say would define you as a creator. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I'm still pleased with The Longest Night, a LoTR fanfic I wrote in 2015 for the International Fanworks Day challenge over on [livejournal.com profile] lotr_community. It came in 2nd place in the Tree and Flower Awards 2015 for Favorite Story Featuring a New Author, which was a most pleasant surprise!

Honesty, an SPN fanfic that I really need to remember to post on A03, is one I think I include in this challenge every year but it's one of my favorites. It's a drabble based around Dean and Future!Cas' conversation in the truck during 'The End'. Future!Cas breaks my heart, he truly does.

Through the Gates, a Goblin Emperor fanfic written for [livejournal.com profile] smallfandomfest Round 19 and based on the prompt 'It's not quite love, but it's not just duty, either.' It's about Maia and Csethiro's developing relationship, because I wanted to see more of that, dammit!

Calling Frequency, a Dead Space fanfic also written for [livejournal.com profile] smallfandomfest Round 19 and based on the prompt 'Trapped on Tau Volantis after the events of Dead Space 3, an injured Carver has to rely on Isaac for help.'. This one was challenging because a) I've only played DS3 single-player and thus only really know Carver through cut scenes and b) it's mostly dialogue and I had a hard time remembering to include actions and descriptions and not wind up with something that read like, as How Not to Write a Novel says, two disembodied brains in a jar having a conversation. But I succeeded!

For the curious, previous versions of this challenge are at the following links: 2016, 2015, 2014.

I tried for NaNoWriMo again this year and didn't quite make it to the 50,000-word goal. I came in 3,406 words short but that still leaves me with $46, 954 more words than I had at the start, and is much closer than last year's effort, which came in at about 10,000 words short. Also, this year's effort has more of a plot to it - I just need to figure out how the monster connects to the mystery door connects to the mine and how I'm going to sort out the socially imposed power imbalance between the leads and the demands of their respective professions to keep them together. Oh, and how the magic one character apparently has fits in - I write stream-of-consciousness and sometimes it makes for interesting results. The time I had to edit the line 'falafel would be good for lunch' out of a training doc on my editing pass particularly stands out.

Fandom Snowflake Challenge bannerDay 10

In your own space, post a rec for fannish and/or creative resources and spaces. Tell us where you go to dig up canon facts for your fandom, or where you get all the juicy details about your favorite ship. Where do you like to hang out and squee like a squeeing thing? Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Well, I mostly lurk so here are some resource links.

If this first list looks familiar, yes, it's the one I posted in answer to this question last year. :)

  • Wikipedia - I know, I know, but if I just need to check, say, the history of tools or clothing, or the basics of an illness or injury it's good enough.

  • TVTropes - In addition to their Useful Notes sections, the pages on the works themselves can be useful if you need to look up something about the material you're working with without having to risk checking it and winding up watching or reading it and not working on what you started out with.

  • Google - If Wikipedia doesn't have the information, or the depth of information, I want I head to Google. Someone, somewhere, knows the history of crinolines, or the frequency of inside shutters in old houses and they may not have been interested enough to put it on Wikipedia.

  • Fan wikis, if they're available. One of the downsides of smaller fandoms though is they tend not to have large wikis, if at all, and when they have one it's often not been updated recently.

  • Pixlr.com - This is an online graphics editor I use for doing simple things, admittedly largely at work but it technically could be used for fan stuff. It's pretty much a Photoshop clone, but not as powerful.

  • GIMP - A much more powerful Photoshop clone, it's more complex than Pixlr and needs to be downloaded to be used but it has a lot more features and you can do more with it.

  • My husband. No, really. He's a fellow nerd and has an encyclopedic knowledge of whatever fandoms he's interested in. (The trick can, in fact, be getting him to stop.)

And here are some resources I picked up from the 2015 Snowflake Challenge, and over the rest of the year:

  • The Domesday Book - Medieval Demographics Made Easy - Put in your kingdom's name, weather type, population density, type of law enforcement etc. and it will generate the demographics for your fictional land! Useful if you're writing original work or trying to figure out how something would work in a fanwork when the author didn't give you exact numbers.

  • List of Random Names - Why bother spending hours thinking up names for incidental characters when you can have a tool that does it for you?

  • Words - Translate Latin to English - It only lets you translate one word at a time, but it does give you a list with a short description of how that word would be used. For example, I put in 'time' and got not only 'tempus' but that 'tempus' refers to 'time, condition, right time' but 'aevum, aevi: time, time of life, age' plus several more.

  • Random Title Generator - Does what it says on the tin. Mind, the titles might not be useable for what you're doing, since you just click a button and don't give it any information but you never know.

  • Online Etymology Dictionary - Words come into use at different times, and change meaning through the centuries. This will give you the history of the word, including when it's first attested, and the meanings it had at different times.

  • Gode Cookery - Want medieval recipes? An Elizabethan dinner conversation? A description of food in the works of Chaucer? Here you go.

  • Georgian Jewelry - Actually a business site not a reference page but it includes clear pictures of the antique and estate jewelry (as far as I can see 'estate' is something like 'gently used') from multiple angles, plus the age of each piece and a little bit of history on it and its style. Plus, it's just lovely to look at. [Edited to add 1/10/16.]

Fandom Snowflake Challenge bannerOh, man, we're past the halfway point already? :(

Day 09

In your own space, set some goals for the coming year. They can be fannish or not, public or private. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

  • Get at least 2 more fanworks done than I did last year. I miss being creative.

  • Get some original fiction written. I actually did fairly well on that last year, coming in around 40k words in NaNo. The world isn't as developed as I'd like and the plot wasn't strong enough to hold an actual book together, but hey! 40k is nothing to sneeze at.

  • Learn to knit socks. I have a sock started, I just got distracted with dice bags. :P They're so easy! Plus, if I can knit socks I can knit stockings and I'd really like a pair or three of pretty, lacy, stockings.

  • Find a job. Easier said than done in a province with an unemployment rate hovering around 9%.

  • Meet or exceed my Goodreads 2016 challenge. Well on my way so far, but it's early days.

  • Get back into scale model building. We've got a workroom and an air booth set up, I really don't have any excuses!

  • Be better about commenting. [livejournal.com profile] just_ann_now linked me to this post on commenting and it made me feel much less nervous about leaving short comments. It's also got suggestions for things you can leave, which is great if you're like me and you go 'but what do I sayyyy!' before losing your nerve and clicking away, vowing to come back - really! Kudos are lovely to get too, mind, but sometimes I want to leave words.

It can be your favorite fanworks that you've created, or fanworks you feel no one ever saw, or fanworks you say would define you as a creator. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Some of these are repeats, both because I still like them and because I got a grand total of, um, two fics done since the last Snowflake Challenge. 2015 sucked and from a lot of people's Day 1 posts I see I'm not the only one.

To Chain Together
Fandom: The Doctrine of Labyrinths
Summary: What do you say when someone you never expected to see again shows up to say what you never expected to hear?

This one is was written for [livejournal.com profile] smallfandomfest in 2015. Mostly. The beginning was supposed to be the answer to the 2015 Snowflake Challenge's Day 6 but the opening paragraph wouldn't yield to anything larger. I ended up using it as a jumping-off point for the fic for the challenge just because I liked Mildmay's description of the lighthouse. The rest of it is because I wasn't satisfied with one of the plot threads I felt was left dangling - though to be fair it is the kind of thing that happens in real life - and because, dammit, Felix and Mildmay deserve a happy ending!

Well, reasonably. It is Doctrine of Labyrinths, after all. I'm sure something will try to possess or kill them soon.

Decisions
Summary: Erestor decides what to do with his day.

Written for the 2014 February Fanon Busters challenge on [livejournal.com profile] lotr_community. The idea of Erestor spending all his time inside and buried in paperwork never sat right with me: if you're immortal you're probably going to develop process improvement at some point, after all.

Honesty
Summary: Cas has his reasons for letting Dean see what he does.

Sad drabble based around Dean and Future!Cas' conversation in the truck during 'The End'. Future!Cas breaks my heart, he's the wreck and ruin of everything Castiel was, and I'm firmly convinced that the entire conversation in question came about because he knows that and wants to change it.

Well, I didn't make it to the 50,00 word count. I came in 8k and change below it at 41, 619.

On the other hand, that's 41,619 words that I probably wouldn't have written otherwise, almost certainly not consecutively. It's also far above last year's attempt of 11K and giving up after the first week or so.

At least now I've got some time to catch up on other things: reading, finally playing Halo 5, finishing up the Christmas gifts I'm knitting. Two are ready for steam-blocking and final stitching, once I've got some buttons, and the third has a mistake that I'll have to unravel back to to fix. If I have time I'll try to make mittens for my brother's girls, although they're still quite young and might not appreciate something handmade. Failing that, it's educational toy/new book time again! Though honestly, the toddler probably won't care either way. I've noticed that holidays don't really start to have meaning for very small children till they're about four or so. While I'm knitting, I can finally catch up on all the subtitled stuff that's backed up on my Netflix queue! I can knit and read the screen at the same time, but even though I'm a touch-typist I always wind up reading what I type as I type it.

So there's December, and then January brings us the Fandom Snowflake Challenge again! Always look forward to that.
