Well, I'm smart, imaginative, and people tell me I'm funny. Cuddly, too, although that's a bit harder to show over the Internet. :P

Fandom Snowflake Challenge 2015: Day 9

In your own space, talk about what surprises you about fandom. It could be a pairing or fandom you never thought you'd like. A fanwork type you never knew existed. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Talk about a talent you discovered you have. Finding folks who are geekier than you, or on the flip side, finding out that there is no one geekier than you. A person who changed your life. The possibilities are endless. Big or small, what unexpected surprises have you found?

There are actually a few people who changed my life in fandom. Finding fandom in my mid-teens meant that for the first time I met other people who were like me, and that helped give me a sense of belonging I'd never really had before. I met my best friend through fandom, when she posted on a newsgroup looking for fellow fans in her area. Fandom brought my husband and I together: we met through mutual fans and while he didn't notice my interest at first (being perfectly fair here, I was underage and he's older than I am by enough I was illegal) we eventually made plans to try and roadtrip to a convention with the abovementioned friend. Those plans fell through, but from there we started hanging out together, then dating, and we have now been together for seventeen years and married for ten this summer. Never in my life did I expect that to happen.
