I also read the Vanyel books as an adult, and that was my reaction too. Actually, my reaction to all of the early Lackey books :P
(Anyway, a glance at TGE fanfic gives one the impression Maia goes on to have impressive amounts of sex with pretty much everyone, so I'd say he's OK on the physical contact front. :P

I've read the Codex Alera books, and I never fell for them the same way I did for the Dresden Files, but I do think they build up to something more interesting than just what you see in the first book. I hope they will grow on you. Books 2 and 3 were actually my least favorite of the series, and I took a longish break after them before coming back to the story. Some of that is probably personal preference, but if you're willing to give it three books, you might want to check out book #4 just to see if it picks up there for you as it did for me.
Oh, and that IS a very striking cover, for The Resurrectionist!
